Keyes Collection

Oneota Bibliographic Database Project

As part of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act inventory of the Keyes Collection in the State Historical Society of Iowa, the Office of the State Archaeologist of Iowa Burials Program is building a database of bibliographic materials related to the collection.

Specifically, the bibliographic database project is now concentrating on archaeological materials known as Oneota, from cultures that may be ancestral to those American Indian nations who lived in Iowa known as the Ioway and Otoe, as well as Missouria, Omaha, and the Winnebago. Included are archaeological, ethnohistoric, anthropological, historical and linguistic information sources.

We are attempting to make the full database available to query from the web, but in the interim, we will provide the database broken down into key categories. You can search within each page by using your web browser Find function. There are now more than 450 annotated sources here, with more than 300 site references. These will be updated as we add more material.

The full database is set up on Microsoft Access 7.0, but can readily be exported into other ODBC databases. If you would like a 3.5" diskette copy of the full database, please contact Larry Zimmerman at larry-zimmerman@uiowa.edu.

Working with the Database

What's in the Database and Why?
A brief essay discusses the material included in the database and the annotation process.

Oneota Site Information Database
An oversized table contains sites referred to in bibliographic sources, providing they give primary information about the site. Sites from nine states are included. (Caution: large file, 175K+)

Complete Oneota Bibliographic Database
This page contains the all sources in the database. This is a very lage file (225k+) and will give you full bibliographic information on sources.

Database Subsets

There are also major subject units broken out from the database. You may wish to use these rather than the complete database. Some sources are duplicated on the subject lists, and some sources appear only on the full list, especially if they are brief or cultural resources management reports that give little site-specific Oneota information. We may add more subject areas if warranted and time allows, and we would welcome your suggestions on the matter. Subjects lists are as follows:
