1994, Color, 22 minutes, TLC Archaeology Series
Summary: The video recaps the issues of the Clovis barrier, including interviews with George Frison, Rick Ward, Paul Bahn, Rob Bonnichsen, and others. Of interest is an introduction by a Native American archaeologist who discusses Indian origin stories and their place in relation to the archaeological constructions. Ward has changed his MtDNA conclusions to suggest that the time of entry into the New World at 15,000 years BP. Interviews with Michael Kunz at the Mesa site in Alaska and with Rob Bonnichsen at the Mammoth Meadow site underscore the search for pre-Clovis sites. At the latter, the discovery of human and animal hair offers greater possibilities of DNA research. Paul Bahn discusses Pedra Furada.
Questions:
1. Why have recent videos on archaeology included Indian views of their own pasts?
2. What does the change of Rick Ward's study of MtDNA indicate about the caution that
should be used in the study of early humans in the New World?
3. How does the discovery of early sites in Alaska change our view of the time of entry
into the continent?
