Lost Tribes and the Moundbuilder
Myth
Speculations about the origins of American Indians
and who built the mounds here in the Americas.
Cryptozoology: Bigfoot, Nessie and
Friends
These creatures of lore abound and have attracted
serious scholarly attention. By and large, there is little to suggest that
they are other than imaginary.
Creationism
and Creation "Science" Links
Some Christians who believe
that the Bible is literal truth have denounced evolution. To
accomplish an agenda that is at least partly political, they have tried to
claim equal time for Creationism in science classrooms. Even though the US
Supreme Court in McLean vs. Arkansas, 1981 has said that "creation
science" is not science, but religion, creationist efforts persist. We
understand the importance of a people's origin stories and belief system
and we are not denying the possibility of creation. We simply can't let
them go on calling what they do a science!
Transoceanic Contacts
Pre-Columbian contact with the Americas by Europeans or Asians was an
essential part of the Moundbuilder myth, but not all trans-oceanic
contacts had to do with American Indians. Some have people such as the
Vikings or Egyptians coming to the Americas. Most archaeologists won't
deny the possibility of trans-oceanic contacts, but the evidence is scanty
at best, and downright hoax at worst.
Sunken Continents and
Catastrophism
Related to the Moundbuilder myth and
trans-oceanic contacts, sunken or lost Continents seem a convenient
answer. Plato's "big bang," so to speak, is still causing ripples.
Catastrophism is related to these lost continents and is often used by
creationists.
Ancient Astronauts
When
in doubt, bring in the extraterrestrials. They'll help you build
everything from batteries, to pyramids, or crop circles. Along the way
they'll mutilate a cow or two, and if you're really lucky, you'll be
abducted! If you have the "right stuff," they may fiddle with your genetic
material and develop a new sub-species of humans.
