Humans, the Environment, and the Great Plains
Rain Game
Objective:
This lesson is designed to be both interesting and thought
provoking. It is a game, and easy to play. It will highlight what
games were like for the early Native Americans, how to use the
environment around them, and how to "think on their feet."
Plan:
- With a class of 20-25, have the students sit in a circle and
lead a discussion on Native American games. Games were designed to
sharpen skills needed in adult life. Games were also just for fun.
They would reflect the environment the children lived in, as well
as their culture.
- Explain the game "Rain" played long ago in the Great Plains.
One can imagine children staying indoors and responding to outside
conditions. They made up a game, creating the sound of a rain
storm using the floor of their dwellings.
- Ask the children what comes before rain. Wind often
picks up. Students make circular motions on the floor, and it
sounds like wind. (If the floor does not have good sound, a heavy
table will do). The next part is small drops of a rain shower. The
sound is made with the fingertips striking the floor softly, then
a little harder. Show the students how long it takes the wind to
build up, and when to start the raindrops. The sounds should
overlap.
- Next comes the sound of steady raindrops. This is done
with the fingers on each hand hitting the floor in quick
succession. The last sound is hard rain made with the palm of each
hand pounding on the floor very quickly.
- The rest of the game is played in reverse order, as the storm
passes. Once the students have mastered the basic steps, have them
close their eyes and listen to the whole effect. It likely will be
quite impressive. The game may have more effect when played in a
dim or dark room.
Testing, Grading, and Evaluation:
A follow-up discussion on Native American games should prove
fruitful. Have the students think of some modern games associated
with the present day climate and resources.
